A knee ankle foot orthosis, or KAFO, is a brace that runs from the thigh to the foot. It is designed to control knee and ankle motion. It can also be used to correct the position of your knee, foot, and ankle.
Your doctor may prescribe a KAFO for a variety of ailments including muscle weakness or paralysis as a result of:
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Spinal cord injury
- Instability caused by broken bones
- Arthritic joints
- Hyperextension of the knee
KAFO’s can be off-the-shelf or custom made for each individual to accommodate their specific needs. Most of our KAFO’s are custom made.
If your doctor prescribes a KAFO, we will cast your leg and then send the cast to the lab to fabricate your brace. The brace can be made with different components depending on your needs. It may have leather or plastic components. It may have locking or non-locking knee joints. Locking knee joints can lock straight or in varying degrees of flexion/extension. The bars may be made of stainless steel, aluminum, or even titanium in special situations.
